Teaching was held at the University of Pavia. In 2003 she received recognition as expert on the subject "Genetics" for the Master in Biological Sciences; from 2008 to today she has held the course "Biostatistics" for the PhD School in Genetics and Biomolecualr Sciences; from 2009 to 2012 she was the holder of a module (3 credits) of the course "Bioinformatics" in the Laurea Magistralis "Molecular Biology and Genetics". She has also organized many laboratories in Statistics and Bioinformatics for masters in Applied Genetics and Biological Sciences.
- Analysis of the genetic structure of Italian population through the study of surnames considered as patrilineally transmitted genetic markers. The genetic heterogeneity of different areas from the geographic, linguistic or historical point of view has been analyzed and the amount and direction of recent and past human migration has been estimated.
- Implementation of a new sampling methodology, based on surname distributions, to obtain sample of individuals autochthonous of Italian provinces. The DNA analysis of this sample could better reveal the genetic profile of the Italian population.
- Study of consanguinity in Italy, through the analysis of the variation, in space and time, of the frequency of consanguineous marriages, to estimate "inbreeding" coefficient of local populations. The spatial heterogeneity of inbreeding in Sardinia between 1850 and 1970 is also analyzed to verify if there are areas of overlap between "reproductive longevity" and high levels of consanguinity.
- Application of multivariate statistical analysis for the genetic study of complex diseases
- Study of factors influencing the evolution in human populations.
- Development of software and database for the analysis of molecular data.
