Experience with PhD Programmes & other training programmes for junior researchers:
Institute of Molecular Biology gGmbH (IMB):
IMB (www.imb-mainz.de) is a newly established Research Centre of Excellence in the Life Sciences in Mainz, Germany. It is funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation and conducts basic and applied research in developmental biology, epigenetics, DNA repair and related biomedical areas. In 2011, it had ~50 employees (goal: ~200 employees by 2013) and an annual budget of approx. € 10M. As IMB’s Director of Scientific Management I am, amongst other tasks, responsible for the Institute’s training programmes for junior researchers and have recently written a grant for € 3.8 M to fund the establishment of a joint International PhD Programme with the University and University Medical School as well as a Max Planck Institute in Mainz.
Management of training programmes for junior researchers, including:
• Establishment of the Institute’s International PhD Programme, incl. Thesis Advisory Committees for all PhD students
• Establishment of the institute’s international training programme for undergraduate students

Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO):
CNIO (www.cnio.es) focuses on basic, applied and clinical aspects of cancer research and is the leading biomedical research centre in Spain. In 2010, it had ~500 employees and an annual budget of approx. € 50M. As CNIO’s Director of Scientific Management I was, amongst other tasks, responsible for the Centre’s training programmes for junior researchers. My department had 9.5 staff positions and a total annual budget of approx. € 1.32M (in 2010).
My responsibilities relating to the CNIO’s training programmes for junior researchers included:
• Establishment and supervision of the Centre’s International PhD Programme, incl. Thesis Advisory Committees for all PhD students
• Establishment and supervision of the Centre’s International Postdoc Programme
• Supervision of the Centre’s national and international training programmes for undergraduate students
• Supervision of the Centre’s training programme for post-resident medical doctors (MDs)

Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology (MPI EB):
MPI EB (www.eb.tuebingen.mpg.de) is a leading institute in the areas of developmental genetics and evo-devo biology. As Public Relations Manager and Manager of the FP6 IP I was in charge of various aspects regarding the training of junior researchers, including:
• Establishment and organisation of the joint International PhD Programme of the MPI EB and the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory (FML) of the Max Planck Society, including the Programme’s course programme, lab rotations as well as an annual PhD Students Symposium
• Overseeing the exchange and training of junior researchers as part of the FP6 IP
